Spring Break '12

I found out that I would be going on a trip to NYC three days before spring break actually began. I was ecstatic to find out that my boyfriend's parents were sending us on a trip to New York for the weekend as an early graduation present. My boyfriend and I are both heavily involved in theater, so taking a trip to the big apple was right up our alley!

We took an 8 hour megabus ride to the city. (A megabus is fairly cheap transportation to and from NYC on a coach-type bus) Though the ride was long and greuling, we finally arrived, and checked into our hotel which was right in Times Square :-)

That night we saw our favorite show on Broadway, "Phantom of the Opera" ... It was everything we imagined it would be!

The next day we took the subway and shopped ALL DAY. We were literally out from 10am-7pm shopping. It was a very fun day, except for I had a very bad cold and we had to walk 25 blocks back to our hotel! Talk about a work out!

We cleaned up a bit, then headed to a swanky little burger place in Times Square. We both got bacon cheeseburgers, and to my surprise, they were delicious! I am not much of a burger person but these were great!

The next day we took the subway to Central Park and from there we walked to a giant candy store called Dylan's Candy Bar. They had every candy you could ever imagine! It was heaven!!!

That was our last stop, before waiting in the cold for the bus that was an HOUR late.
That was probably the most frustrating, being cold, tired, and knowing we had a very long trip ahead.
We arrived in Pittsburgh around 1:30 am and we were EXHAUSTED.

The trip was so much fun, and I am so glad I actually got to spend spring break out of town for a bit!!

  1. Your spring break seems like it was really fun. I just traveled to NYC last summer and I loved every minute being there. I loved it so much that this summer I plan to travel there with my friends again. I am jealous that you got to enjoy a broadway show. It is the only thing that I did not get to do last summer, but definitely doing this summer. The Phantom of the Opera is also on my list of possible shows, your recommendations makes me want to see it even more.

I also did not get to shop as much as I would have liked last summer, so I think it's awesome that you got to visit many shopping destinations. New York City is known for its fashion, so it is really something I want to do in the future.

I personally loved just walking around in TImes Square. At times, I found myself just standing still trying to soak in everything happening around me. It is definitely one of the best places to travel to.

  2. Hey Sarah,

I enjoyed reading your post. Being told you are going to New York 3 days before spring break had to be an amazing feeling. I didn't get to do anything exciting over break but work. I am going to Disney though a week after I graduate though so I am excited for that.

It's also pretty cool you got to do things that were of personal interest. Seeing Phantom of Opera seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity!

I have never been to New York before but I would definitely like to make a trip in the near future.

  4. Sarah it sounds like you had a very enjoyable time! NYC is a great city as I had the chance to go there twice. There is so much to do there and so much to see. I never have gone to a musical of that magnitude like a phantom of the opera. I am glad you spent your spring break with your bf and you got to do the things you liked.

  5. SARAH LYNN!

I love hearing about your adventures with Ryan! First of all, I would just like to say that I am so jealous you went on such an amazing trip! Second, I also love "The Phantom of the Opera"!! It is hands down my favorite musical. Ever. I have seen it multiple times that's how obsessed I am.

I am also so excited that you went to Dylan's Candy Shop! Isn't it so cool?! The first time I was there, I could not get over the THREE FLOORS OF CANDY GOODNESS! Perfection.

Finally, I (admittedly) laughed so hard at you having to stand an hour out in the cold. That just sucks!

I am glad to hear you had such an awesome time!

  6. Sarah Lynn, that sounds like an amazing trip! I get to NYC at least once a year since i have family in Manhattan and we always love going to the shows on Broadway, though I still haven't seen Phantom of the Opera, the last show i saw there was Billy Elliot and Spamalot, though I hope to get to the Book of Mormon soon. Its great that you enjoyed the break, we are almost done with school!

  7. Trip sounds like a blast. I have been to NYC city in years. I love it there though. I am glad you had a great time. I give Ryan some credit for shopping that long. I hate shopping; there is no way I could have done it.

  8. Sarah, I'm glad you and Ryan had fun on your trip to NYC. I used to live there and I forgot how much fun it can be when you take time to enjoy it instead of being caught up in the hustle and bustle. Thats awesome you got to see a Broadway play, I went and saw the Lion King when I was really little but of course back then I didn't appreciate it. You have to take a trip to the top of the empire state building at some point, I think you would love it!

  9. Finally, someone who had fun on break!!

That's so exciting you got to travel to NYC. Especially because it was a present. You're so lucky!

I've only been there once, and it was really overwhelming. It's such a magnanimous city with so many different avenues of adventure that I wouldn't know how to plan accordingly for a short visit. But it sounds like you did a lot while you were there, and I would have been so excited to see Phantom on Broadway! I'm sure it was worth every moment. Seeing the Lion King on Broadway completely changed my perspective on theater because I only saw smaller-scale productions before that, and it really opened my eyes to what professional theater at such a high level of performance and budget can produce. Quite an effect.

The shopping was addicting too, and as I can remember, I found the most deals in China Town. :)

It's good to hear you had such a memorable trip. I wish I could have been as fortunate to travel during the break.

I never have been to New York and always wanted to go, I hear great things about it, minus how busy and fast moving it is. Im glad you got to enjoy your break and get out of PA. Its always exciting to travel and do fun things. People can take life for granted.
